turmeric [Oct. 31st, 2009|08:41 am]
[Tags|, , ]

one more random thing. this bbc article notes that scientists have shown in the lab that curcumin (from turmeric, the curry spice) kills cancer cells. it is also known to clear up psoriasis. plus, according to the same article, it is being investigated as a treatment for arthritis and even dementia. i feel like i should start adding it to my routine, just in case i have any of those things. and, of course, a few years ago researchers identified the compound in green tea that fights cancer in the same way anti-cancer drugs do. i just think it's funny that all these discoveries come from natural sources, and not a pharmaceutical lab. but of course, it's hard to make money selling green tea and turmeric, especially when it's not name-brand and you don't need a prescription.

tiramisu [Oct. 31st, 2009|08:36 am]
[Tags|, ]

i think if you're going to attempt a world record, this is a good one. i wonder how it comes out, though. because it's hard to make a good tiramisu, and it's got to be really hard to make a ginormous tiramisu.

A dozen chefs in France have laid claim to rustling up the world's largest Tiramisu dessert, weighing over a tonne and having to be stored in an ice rink.

aging emokids and me [Oct. 17th, 2009|09:54 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

last night, we went to hear sunny day real estate at the paramount. i think the last time i heard them live was in 1998 in cincinnati at bogart's with frank, although i may have also seen them after the rising tide came out. when sunny day came out and started playing, i felt like i was 20 again, except that i was exhausted from getting up at 5am, my back hurt, and i was surrounded by aging emokids. also, i was in a beautiful performance hall with sparkling chandeliers and ornate decor. and i had a seat in the mezzanine, for which my tired body was so grateful.

for the unacquainted:

there are moments in my life where i experience bliss, moments of overwhelming joy that make me feel like i might explode. oddly enough, these rare moments frequently come at shows, as occurred last night when they played "in circles."

travels in italy [Sep. 19th, 2009|09:29 am]
[Tags|, ]

it's been a week since we arrived in italy, and we've spent more money than i thought possible and traveled all over the country. we slept off our jet lag, and then headed by bus to the local train station and took three trains to siena, where we spent several days and made new canadian friends. i got to see st. catherine's head and her thumb, which so far has been the highlight of my trip, i think. holy relics are a little like a scavenger hunt, and i'm considering becoming roman catholic because of how much fun they are. i'm hoping to see some more relics before i go, possibly in venice. after sienna, we headed to montepulciano, a much smaller town with fewer tourists. it may be the most beautiful place i've ever been. however, it will soon be ruined, as we discovered that the new twilight movie was filmed there. i think once it comes out, it will be overrun with fans. so if you want to enjoy the most beautiful place i've ever seen, you should go before that movie ruins it all. we headed back to polcinego to my sister's house yesterday, with promises of harvesting grapes at someone's small vineyard or something. but the rain ruined that opportunity. if it clears up, it's possible we'll still get to work hard in the vineyard, and eat homecooked italian meals. of all the food we've had so far, the gnocchi in polcinego has been my favorite, while the chinese food in siena has been the least expensive. i liked the idea of americans eating chinese food in italy.

we probably won't be able to post photos until we return, but oh, just wait!

here we are at the airport with two hours to kill. i managed to get a few hours sleep before our 2:30am wakeup, but poor tim couldn't sleep. all i want right now is some breakfast and a cup of coffee, but nothing's open.

just a few hours and we'll be on our way to italy! woo!

time [Sep. 5th, 2009|10:39 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

it's amazing to me that it's already september. i don't know where the time goes. and i've been at my job now for about 4.5 years, which ties it with the longest i've ever held a job. but the last time, i was truly miserable and should have quit a year before i did. i guess i'm wiser now, and a little more mature. but not too mature.

this fall is full of newness. tim and i will head to italy in just a few days for a two-week vacation. i'm super excited. i really have no idea what to expect, and will just be so glad to not be working for a while. we'll start off in the venice area, and then who knows! upon our return, i'm starting a class on monday nights that i'm really looking forward to.

i've decided the key thing is to have something to look forward to. it's a little sad to say that i can't just live in the moment and appreciate every breath. i have to be looking ahead. i need something to keep me excited. right now, it's italy. when i get back, it's my class. then i'll have to plan another vacation or something. without those things, my job just weighs on me, and i realize my youth is passing me by while i waste my days working, and especially working for a company whose values i don't share. and there are so many more important things. so for now, those little breaks for vacation or classes or bike rides with tim, those are things i hold onto. and hopefully before too long, we'll be in a space where we have no need for the job and the money, and we can spend our time doing the more important things. i don't want to be 65 when i finally get to enjoy my life. in fact, i already missed my first goal, which was 30. and i can't type my new goal, because it already makes me sad that i'll be so much older than i wanted to be by the time i retire.

nothing much [Aug. 8th, 2009|03:30 pm]
[Tags|, ]

i've really gotten out of the habit of blogging lately. i don't know why, but i just never seem to have the time. that or i have nothing to say.

we've been watching season one of the wire. it's a well-written show, although i'm not sure how into it i really am. i was walking down to broadway today to do my errands, and i notice myself thinking everyone is either an addict or a dealer. it's kind of funny. i thought somebody was following me, too. because that's what they do on the wire. great, now i'm paranoid.

northwest film forum [Jul. 30th, 2009|05:33 pm]

i just read about northwest film forum's urgent need for donations as it has a huge budgetary gap. nwff is such a great little indie theatre, and really supports local film-making, and that's why i'm signing up as a member.

stimulus [Jul. 12th, 2009|01:06 pm]

i was reading the chs blog a few days ago, and found out about the city stimulus, an effort to stimulate our local ecomony. a whole bunch of restaurants and stores are participating with sales and specials, and for every $10 you spend, you can get a free raffle ticket for the finale on saturday at havanna. we're about to head off to do some stimulating right now.

holy crap, what a great day. [Jun. 10th, 2009|02:48 pm]

tim graduates today, so that alone makes it a good day. but, in addition, i found a flight to venice for under $400 this morning. so tim and i will be heading off to italy to visit la sistera (i'm pretending that's italian for "the sister") in september! awesome. and i'm already on vacation right now. and up until a second ago, the kitty was laying on my lap while i typed. GREAT DAY.

first day [Jun. 9th, 2009|06:02 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

today is the first day of vacation after three days of work and a previous vacation. the first item on my agenda today was to sleep in at least until 7, but i failed. i woke up at 5 for some reason this morning. i think i may need a nap today.

tomorrow is a big day! tim is graduating with his b.a. in sociology. very very very exciting. i'm really excited to give him his present, too. i was thinking about that this morning while i should have been sleeping, hoping that the last piece, which i had to order online, might arrive in time.

also, as an aside, we went to see my friend's brother's movie at siff last night, (500) days of summer. i've been really excited about it for a long time, but really lowered my expectations last night. i told myself just because it's my friend's brother, that doesn't mean it will be good. but it was so good! it was funny and well acted and well directed, and i'm really excited because i think it might just be really big for marc webb. it opens july 17, and i highly recommend it.

today, i have mopped the floor, and that's all. oh, and i helped clean the kitchen. i guess that's it though. i've decided to mow tomorrow, so that it will be a few more days it can go until it needs mowed again. grass is silly, needing mowing all the time. i wonder why we plant it everywhere... moss is so much easier to handle.

we're taking andrea to the cincinnati airport in about an hour, and then hopefully we'll get to stop and see my cousin on the way back. i head back tomorrow evening. it seems like it's been a super short trip.

yesterday, i made the following:

+ high-protein energy bars
+ old-fashioned cream cake with buttercream frosting
+ pie crust for chicken pot pie (andrea made the filling)
+ 2 batches of cinnamon rolls, the first of which we had for breakfast.

i used well over a pound of butter yesterday. YUM! today, i so far i've vacuumed the living room, and helped clean the kitchen. i'm in the process of cleaning up the very slow computer (hp is my nemesis right now) and i was going to mow the lawn, but the thunderstorms we had the morning changed that plan. i think if i do it wednesday morning, it will be best. then it won't need to be mowed for another 5 days or so.

i wish i got this much accomplished at home!

ohio = humid [May. 31st, 2009|11:46 am]

i just popped in for a few days. my sister got a cheap flight from italy, so i decided to come too. gosh, i can't believe how skinny and bony my dad is after his surgery and pneumonia. he's always been thin, but never nearly this thin. (he's probably 20-30lbs lighter than his normal size.) i have a list for the grocery store so i can make tons of high-calorie, high-protein foods for him. i'm going to start with the white cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. i think one piece adds at least 5 lbs.
